The moment the sorrowful riffs of “The Lake” hit, the fans will instantly know that the guys haven’t misled them, and that this opus is high-octane epic Doom all the way.

Faster-paced guitars emerge at some point their dynamic leaps assisted by surprising Death Metal growls before more lyrical deviations sink everything in grief and mourning.
“Black Hours” combines doom with the ballad in a deeply atmospheric, elegiac aura accentuated by the excellent emotional clean vocals; the pace is almost funereal with an overt melancholic vibe as well the atter poignantly present on the following title-track which suddenly moves towards more aggressive ways of expression those bringing the death metal throat to the fore once again.

“Come to Me” recalls the My Dying Bride nostalgic dirges with lamentable guitars and more melodic undercurrents until a portion of more bouncy, more vivid rhythms start moving things around not without the help of the great vocal tirades, the most epic composition here with an imposing sombre finale.

“My Angel” is an encompassing 10+ minutes saga which relies on the ballad and more melodic embellishments, but the mood instilled is one-of-a-kind although there’s hardly a mid-tempo stroke during its playing time. Sorrow and grief in copious amounts, but it can’t be any other way with one of Doom Metal’s finest “condemning” everyone to mourning with “Condemned” where the Death Metal growler shows up at the beginning to inaugurate a marvelous more energetic hymn with great ship-sinking riffage and a wider array of rhythmic sections the guitars constantly juggling between slow and more dynamic dashes.

“When All is Black” is a delightful depressing funeral “march” with the slowest performance on the album, a fitting ending to this classic Doom masterpiece.

For vintage, seismic retro Doom Metal one shouldn’t look any further than this opus. Deep sorrowful Doom Metal! New album coming in March 2023.

We guess by 2023 Isole hardly needs to do anything in order to be considered the third Doom Metal behemoth on Swedish soil after Candlemass and Count Raven.
With only masterful Doom Metal opuses in their discography the guys should have been content with the impact they had on the scene enjoying their status as one of the premier Doom Metal providers in the new millennium.

Prone to a more progressive style of songwriting than masters of epic Doom like Candlemass and Solitude Aeturnus, Isole heap a lot of content into their songs, which makes “The Calm Hunter” a challenging, yet exciting listen even at only 51 minutes.

What this album draws closest to is a more boisterous and less reverent - though equally sorrow-filled - travel through Doom’s heartlands of woe and regret as imagined by Swallow the Sun and October Tide. Guitars chug heartily, death growls meet monkish croons and choirboy cleans, while some sections leap off the track and scramble down a hillside at pace.

The important thing here is to recognize that Isole are not following the established rules of this style as they did a little bit more on their previous releases but attempt to introduce some new features and add excitement, though not at the expense of losing the sombre mood. The lightness and ease of movement implied by this ability to change pace keeps the listener guessing throughout The Calm Hunter, plus adds to the weight of the gloomier Doom sections.
The energetic guitar tone and variety of riffing styles work really well, giving ballast to the songs and driving the compositions forward, which gain atmosphere from the vocal melody, creating a perfect balance between the key elements of energy and emotion.

The way that Isole veer away from the obvious is also a pleasant surprise, since Doom Metal can take its own gravity a little too seriously, meaning that some bands refuse to stray from the typical trudging melancholy. Avoiding this trait may be a result of the band’s tendency to use song dynamics to affect the emotions generated, since some of the pieces here build intensity towards the end, while others wind down in gentler style.

The result is for the album to feel varied and full even with only seven songs on offer. Also present on this album are several melodic moments that flurry around the basic song chassis in a manner that sometimes makes one think of melo Death, but often sound menacing or ethereal in a true doom sense, like during ‘Perdition’. These are very effective, either breaking up the occasionally plodding traditional doom fare and lifting the mood or crushing down harder to produce feelings of loss and despair.

It’s refreshing to see a band such as Isole step up and take charge of their destiny like this: if they plan to continue in the same distinctive direction, they might well become leaders in a new wave of Doom Metal.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0974/6500/8471/files/Isole-The-Calm-Hunter-CD-127765-1-1668757897.jpg?v=1778164446
isole-silent-ruins-cd
Isole - Silent Ruins - CD

Classic Isole album finally available again! Deep sorrowful Doom Metal!

Being able to make songs with play lengths over 10 minutes that go by as if it was a 1-minute interlude is quite a positive skill and Isole seems to have acquired this skill to a high proficiency. Even though “Silent Ruins” is over 50 minutes long, it is over before you know it. This is by no means a negative remark, but merely serves to underscore the quality of Isole’s songwriting. In fact, the music is highly enjoyable, heavy and intricate, and topped with a great production.

Although slow and mid-paced songs are most of what this album has to offer, Isole seems to be keeping a rather firm speed in moving through their songs. It is never the case that the songs become too slow or become boring because too little is happening. While none of the music is cheerful or mirthy, the atmosphere on “Silent Ruins” seems to be slightly more uplifting and positive than your regular doom metal band. Perhaps Isole sees the light at the end of the tunnel, rather than only the depressing journey through the tunnel itself. It is not all quite as sorrowful and dejected as you might expect. In a sense, Isole’s music on this album reminds more of epic doom metal bands, despite there being a rather gloomy undertone throughout, particularly in the vocals department. Vocals vary between low choir-like chanting, regular mid-range clean vocals and higher pitched clean vocals, all of these being well-placed and fitting the music like a glove. Paired with the largely audible bass and good drumming employed, “Silent Ruins” is simply a great doom metal record with quality songs all around.

In all, Isole shows that they are the complete package. All aspects of this record, from songwriting to execution and packaging, are strong as can be and “Silent Ruins” is an album that deserves a place in any fan of the doom metal genre, regardless of whether it is on account of the beautiful vocals or the impressive quality of the music and production.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0974/6500/8471/files/Isole-Silent-Ruins-CD-128123-1-1669647524.jpg?v=1778165221
isole-bliss-of-solitude-cd
Isole - Bliss of Solitude - CD

Classic Isole album available again! Melodic and beautiful, captivating yet crushing!

This is the third album from the majestic, marvelous Isole. After the amazing “Throne Of Void” we all had high expectations for this album, and those were fulfilled. Venturing once more through “Bliss Of Solitude”, the album opens up after some spins, and becomes something so powerful some still can’t believe it. This album is like a picture of two faces: if you stare at it long enough, it becomes something else entirely. This album is not too easily accessible at all, which should not be a shock for a Doom album, but it really takes some time to tune into it, and then you are treated to masterful riffs, impressive and classically inflected leadwork, and haunting vocals that sound like a ghost in a cathedral. This is sorrowful, and yet the sheer beauty of it lifts it from depressing into exaltation. Incredible that this is only their sophomore effort, though this band has been together in one form or another since 1991. One would even have to give Isole a slight edge in songwriting overall. The sound, the riffs, everything here is first-rate, and the atmosphere is magisterial and grandly bleak.
