The guitars are not so tuned down anymore and the vocals are less growling.\u003cbr\u003eThe opener “Constant reminders” is still in old school style Death\/Thrash; a song that could easily have fitted well in master’s previous works\u003cbr\u003ewith the fast bass drum and up tempo. most songs that follow are Thrashier and even have a bit of punkier approach, going straigh ahead. a\u003cbr\u003ecool different song is the nice Thin Lizzy cover of “Jailbreak”, master goes Hardrock. The song “The Perfect Family” comes closest to the d-beat Master we got used to from their first two albums. A very nice surprise is the song “Pistols, Whips and Coyotes” which refers a lot to Macabre in terms of riffs although sounding slightly simpler because of the drums. Had Dennis The Menace played on this song nobody would have noticed it isn’t Macabre.\u003cbr\u003eThe punky attitude of the album becomes most obvious on songs such as “Rights of Life” and “Envy” (which almost sound like 1987-1991 era Sodom). Most notable song is the punk song “Another Day in Phoenix” which even has some clean vocals and incidentally is one of the highlights of the album. Arguably one of the first Death Metal vocalists along with Kam Lee or Jeff Becerra, Speckmann’s throaty, almost hoarse delivery belches and bellows out over the din of some speedy guitar work that pummels the senses as much as it impresses. The initial first tracks in “The New Elite” and “Rise Up and Fight” show that Master is still at the top of its game, both lyrically and musically.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWhile there is no denying the absolute tenacity with which Master assembles and shatters the psyche within the span of any one album, “The New Elite” is a vile slab of musical vermin that is about as brutal as it comes while still retaining a perfect balance between guttural noise and intelligent metal easily consumable in large portions. Slower tracks like “Redirect the Evil” harken back to a time where Possessed and Dark Angel reigned supreme in the West Coast dominion. The second is therealization that someone is playing some seriously insane, brilliantly constructed leads. in this case, that someone is paul Masvidal, farexceeding anything\u003cbr\u003ehe ever achieved with Cynic.\u003cbr\u003eBeneath the surface simplicity, lies a creative spirit that at once recalls the primal birth of death metal (which Master was both present for and very much a driving force behind) and points the way to what the genre might have become. Very apparent are the genre’s hardcore roots, Master here eschewing the slayer-derived technical architecture that came to dominate most “modern” death metal in favor of structures that would not have been out of place on Discharge’s landmark “Hear Nothing see Nothing say Nothing” release (there are even a few appear-\u003cbr\u003eances of the infamous D-beat). Within the unrelenting storm of brutal repetition, the music’s core meaning is encoded, a sheer primal rage drip-ping from thunderous cycles of power chords and the open throated roar (again the hardcore influence) of vocalist and chief songwriter Paul speckman. To this, Master adds moments of ponderous reflection where songs collapse into a sort of high decibel dirge, an innate sense of\u003cbr\u003ehow to tease melody from the infernal depths of dissonance, and the aforementioned Masvidal solos (and it cannot be overemphasized just\u003cbr\u003ehow much these leads rip). We as fans, as well as the other bands owe a lot of respect to paul and\u003cbr\u003eMaster and what he helped to create.\u003cbr\u003eit is hard to put it’s greatness into words, this album just has an unexplainable unique atmosphere, not present on most death metal albums\u003cbr\u003ereleased since. paul speckmann treats the listener with very distinct and harsh vocals. More harsh even than his vocals are his lyrics, very well\u003cbr\u003ewritten, from a sarcastic\/cynical point of view. as for the riffs, man is the guitar tone heavy as hell and way ahead of it’s time.\u003cbr\u003eBasically there are no real flaws, the only thing that had always upsets me, is that it doesn’t last longer. Best songs on here have to be, well all of them. and sure as hell no Death Metal collection is complete without these legendary songs! so we hope we are doing this legendary album\u003cbr\u003ejustice, because as soon as we listened to it upon its release, it became a personal favorite. The tempo is with wonderful penetrance almost continuously in the classic eighties turnip thrash beat, there is plenty of double bass, and Paule moos around wonderfully antisocially.
