The studio was suitably situated on the site of an old WW2 coding bunker and brought with it the isolation of the bleak British countryside. The setting helped give the album an intense and smiling urgency that picks up where 80s UK bands such as Magazine, The Wire and Echo And The Bunnymen left off, but never stopping long enough to look back too much into the past. Featuring guest vocals from David Tibet from Current 93, the band sets the tone for their inspirations, from the esoteric underground of England’s hidden reverse to Manchester’s sound of misery. With their own metallic raw tone clashed with pop hooks, Motherblood is a furiously passionate and contemporary record, which re-defines postpunk as a “war-cry for the eternally doomed.” They have been described as \"A post-punk wet dream,\" or perhaps more honestly as \"batshit lunatics,\" and their music is in a funereal world of its own. Where most people look at a forest and see wood for sale, a death metal fan after Demilich sees an intricate organism in itself, with the smallest details corresponding to the broadest concepts. The labyrinthine riffs of Demilich corresponded to a worldview that saw the connection between details as a design, and a design as conferring a purpose to life, cycling between birth and death as it spelled out the cryptic intricacies of ancient mysteries. Demilich was like finding a submerged city, or discovering a new path through the mountains, or even confronting a glowering enemy on the open plain. It brought risk,  uncertainty, ambiguity and a sense of sublime beauty back to death metal, pulling it away from the slump in which it treated itself as a hammer and every listener as a nail. When Nespithe arrived in 1993, most of the response was mostly scornful and disturbed at first. Most reacted with a sense of this not being what they expected, therefore it was wrong. But a few saw underground metal being given new life through twisting passages of fractal melody in structures that evolved as the song progressed, creating successive expansions of meaning which developed the exotic from the mundane and the natural from the bizarre. Unlike the devotional nature of most pop music, Demilich was esoteric, and required the listener to discard preconceptions and meet it halfway in order to understand it. Over time more joined the growing fanbase for Demilich, but metal -- and music at large -- never really caught up with Demilich. Contemporary progressive music seems to thrive on hitting us with a linear series of contrasting parts but never integrating them into a theme like Demilich would have. Many have since imitated it, but none have achieved that dreamlike state in which all is infinite and possibility is around every corner. In October 1976 an opening appeared in the schedule for a studio session, during which Jim Pembroke’s third solo album, Corporal Cauliflower’s Mental Function, was recorded. After that, Wigwam played five gigs in Denmark at the end of November, followed by an equal number in Sweden. No exact information has survived about the concert setlists, but the band was in a stable phase, and certain songs had become staples in their live repertoire. Albums from Wigwam's deep-pop era, which began in autumn 1974, as well as Pembroke’s first solo records had already been released, and rehearsals were underway for what would become the Dark Album, released in 1977. It can be said that this concert, recorded for Danish Radio, is a strong representation of the band’s era at the time. The recording took place in northern Denmark, in a district called Lundtofte in Lyngby. Before this, Wigwam had performed in Køge and Århus, and after Lundtofte, gigs in Ballerup and Copenhagen awaited. Lundtofte was home to the Danish Technical University (DTU), where a student venue called “Studenterhuset” (Building 101) hosted a one- to two-day music events known as Polyjoint during the 1970’s. The events typically featured Danish bands, but also visiting acts like Wigwam. Most importantly, Danish Radio was sometimes present at these events. Wigwam had performed a studio concert for Danish Radio the previous year, but this particular recording is considered the more energetic of the two. Details have faded with time — for example, the identity of the second act at the concert is unknown. In any case, both guitarist Pekka “Rekku” Rechardt and keyboardist Pedro Hietanen remember the band being in high spirits, in top form, and highly motivated. They had a deal with Virgin Records in their pocket, had gained international touring experience, and the future looked bright. After returning from Denmark, Wigwam soon entered the studio just after Christmas to begin building the Dark Album. Greg’s name has appeared as a guest vocalist, guitarist and sometime keyboard player on many a release over the years, but this was intended to be a fully collaborative association from the outset, as well as a reuniting of old accomplices – Kris was one of the guitarists in Esoteric’s line-up from 2007-2009, rejoining in August 2019. Completing the line-up for the recording sessions was drummer Tom Vallely, though as a guest\/session performer rather than as a full band member. As a professional musician, veteran performer with bands such as Sanctus Nex and Lychgate, and having handled the drums on Terrestrial, Tom was already known to both Kris and Greg and the obvious choice to engage for this project as ‘lead drummer’.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe result of their combined endeavours is the full-length album Contagion Of Despair, which was recorded at Greg’s Priory Studios using a variety of innovative techniques, including wiring up the whole building to create spacious, expansive recording spaces, or digitising live drums to drag an ’80s Hip-Hop sub-bass groove into the mix. Self Hypnosis set out to use all of these techniques, and more, to create a completely unique mix of Doom and non-Doom influences that would nonetheless converge towards a genuinely ProgDoom result, and with Contagion Of Despair, they’ve managed that to perfection. Completing the line-up for the recording sessions was drummer Tom Vallely, though as a guest\/session performer rather than as a full band member.
