No need to go through all songs here but just a few to give you an indication. The album starts off with the Thrashy “You’ll be blamed” which is reminiscent of the earlier “Collection Of Souls” album (though catchier) and with Abomination tendencies. Also a song such as “Sign Up” is very old school Thrash Metal with those typical harsch Speckmann vocals. “The Serpents Tongue” is a straight forward uptempo Death Metal tune and same goes for “Whatever, Wherever, Forever”. The song “The Perfect Family” comes closest to the d-beat Master we got used to from their first two albums. A very nice surprise is the song “Pistols, Whips and Coyotes” which refers a lot to Macabre in terms of riffs although sounding slightly simpler because of the drums. Had Dennis The Menace played on this song nobody would have noticed it isn’t Macabre.
The punky attitude of the album becomes most obvious on songs such as “Rights of Life” and “Envy” (which almost sound like 1987-1991 era Sodom). Although Entrails was formed in the early 90s, thus belonging to the “First Wave of Old School Swedish Death Metal”, they resurrected in the year 2008 only to become an emblematic member of what can be rightly designated as the “New Wave of Old School Swedish Death Metal” in the following years.
To begin with, the bands recordings always had convincing power and ambience but there is always room for improvement, right? “An Eternal Time of Decay” however marks a welcoming depart because it represents a much needed restart, with more elaborated and original songs incorporating as well a balanced technicality without losing
old-schoolness. Entrails simply don’t seem to care about the newfangled ways of doing things. They love their beloved genre and simply seek to honor it; hey, if it’s not broke, why try to fix it, right? This music is unapologetically old school, very much in the same vein as bands like Grave and Dismember, and yet despite being about 30+ years after those
bands’ inceptions, Entrails succeeds at keeping a very raw spirit intact for this genre and these tunes. Cult not only because “The End” is just their 2nd album since initial formation back in 1990, not only that the main protagonists hail from the highly under-rated Isole, nor too that their sound is steeped in “Hammerheart”-era Bathory, but that on top of all this we have here one album of music passionate and epic enough to deserve the use of this hallowed word. Put it this way, if you worship at the altar of Viking-era Bathory, then “The End” is going to please you a lot. Songs like “Myrding”, “Vargavinter (The End Part I)” and “The Final War (The End Part III)” plod along at their own casual pace, stopping by to tick the boxes of ‘crushing’, ‘dramatic’ and ‘proud’ on their way to the creation of an album that could hardly be less fashionable despite having one foot in the Viking metal camp. With a vocal performance from Ragnar (Daniel Bryntse) which becomes increasingly Quorthon-like during the album’s 48 minutes Ereb Altor makes no bones about who their main influence is. Passionate lead and backing vocals, gentle yet strikingly profound synth accompaniment and monotonous drums (in a good way) all go into the making of the album’s best track “Myrding”, showcasing how content the band are to play music straight from the heart in strong defiance of the need to be the heaviest, fastest, slowest or most technical outfit out there. Given the true doom feel, naturally derived from Isole some of the potential Viking/pagan metal crowd may be turned off, shocked at the absence of blastbeats, riffing speed or screaming. The initial first tracks in “The New Elite” and “Rise Up and Fight” show that Master is still at the top of its game, both lyrically and musically.

While there is no denying the absolute tenacity with which Master assembles and shatters the psyche within the span of any one album, “The New Elite” is a vile slab of musical vermin that is about as brutal as it comes while still retaining a perfect balance between guttural noise and intelligent metal easily consumable in large portions. Slower tracks like “Redirect the Evil” harken back to a time where Possessed and Dark Angel reigned supreme in the West Coast dominion. The sound is a total encompassment of the Swedish sound of the late 80’s/early 90’s and a modern underground anger employed by only a few cellar-dweller bands that ‘get’ it.

We expected all of this and more from Master and they failed to disappoint, as usual.

TRACKLIST
1. This time, Therion challenged to make a concept album which concept is based on Norse mythology. In this album, each song gets one of the names and concepts of nine worlds. “Secret of the Runes” sounds very different from any other albums of Therion, and it’s also one of the best albums Therion has ever made. On “Secret of the Runes”, Therion’ s music style becomes more various than their previous albums. Aside from the operatic choruses and symphony orchestra, they add many Scandinavian sounds such as black and Viking metal.

More surprisingly, the music fits with concept perfectly. “Secret of the Runes” is not only a perfect combination of music and concept, but also a unique album in Therion’ s career. This album is an extremeness of feeling. It contains epic, majesty, beauty, peace and passion. You can listen to this album in any kind of mood. This album also shows magnificent atmosphere of Scandinavian epic metal, which Therion has never composed before. Moreover, the musicianship in this album is better than all of their previous albums. The solos in “ Midgård”, “ Asgård”, and” Vanaheim” are amazing, the acoustic guitars in “ Ljusalfheim” and “ Vanaheim” are astonishing. This album remains in high rotation and is one of only a handful of genre defining records released in a lifetime. Therion tone down the operatic quotient of earlier albums like “Voivin” and increasing the metallic elements to reach a perfect balance. Balance is probably the best way of describing Lemuria.

It’s paced perfectly, from the bombastic openers “Typhon”, “Uthark Runa” and “Three Ships of Berik (I & II)” which all feature sharp guitar work and varied vocal styles. The album settles down towards the middle – during “Lemuria”, “Quetzalcoatl” and the first half of “Dreams of Swedenborg” which boasts an absolutely brilliant guitar solo and is a definite highlight on an album so equal throughout. The album clears out on the positively brilliant trio “Arrow from the Sun”, “Abraxas” and “Feuer Overture” which brings the album full circle with a nice mid-tempo rocker. Also worth noting is the production which is also perfectly balanced so that no
element of the music is overbearing, allowing the strength of song writing to shine. Creating something this multi-faceted and cohesive, utilising the entire tonal spectrum with more than 171 musicians is an achievement in itself.

Therion also obviously had a huge amount of material early 2004 when they set about recording their pair of albums. “Lemuria” in particular of the pair displays a strength of song writing fused together to create the rare kind of record where each track both fits together as a whole and can stand on its own. Deep sorrowful Doom Metal! New album coming in March 2023.

We guess by 2023 Isole hardly needs to do anything in order to be considered the third Doom Metal behemoth on Swedish soil after Candlemass and Count Raven.
With only masterful Doom Metal opuses in their discography the guys should have been content with the impact they had on the scene enjoying their status as one of the premier Doom Metal providers in the new millennium.

Prone to a more progressive style of songwriting than masters of epic Doom like Candlemass and Solitude Aeturnus, Isole heap a lot of content into their songs, which makes “The Calm Hunter” a challenging, yet exciting listen even at only 51 minutes.

What this album draws closest to is a more boisterous and less reverent - though equally sorrow-filled - travel through Doom’s heartlands of woe and regret as imagined by Swallow the Sun and October Tide. Guitars chug heartily, death growls meet monkish croons and choirboy cleans, while some sections leap off the track and scramble down a hillside at pace.

The important thing here is to recognize that Isole are not following the established rules of this style as they did a little bit more on their previous releases but attempt to introduce some new features and add excitement, though not at the expense of losing the sombre mood. The lightness and ease of movement implied by this ability to change pace keeps the listener guessing throughout The Calm Hunter, plus adds to the weight of the gloomier Doom sections.
The energetic guitar tone and variety of riffing styles work really well, giving ballast to the songs and driving the compositions forward, which gain atmosphere from the vocal melody, creating a perfect balance between the key elements of energy and emotion.

The way that Isole veer away from the obvious is also a pleasant surprise, since Doom Metal can take its own gravity a little too seriously, meaning that some bands refuse to stray from the typical trudging melancholy. Avoiding this trait may be a result of the band’s tendency to use song dynamics to affect the emotions generated, since some of the pieces here build intensity towards the end, while others wind down in gentler style.

The result is for the album to feel varied and full even with only seven songs on offer. Also present on this album are several melodic moments that flurry around the basic song chassis in a manner that sometimes makes one think of melo Death, but often sound menacing or ethereal in a true doom sense, like during ‘Perdition’. These are very effective, either breaking up the occasionally plodding traditional doom fare and lifting the mood or crushing down harder to produce feelings of loss and despair.

It’s refreshing to see a band such as Isole step up and take charge of their destiny like this: if they plan to continue in the same distinctive direction, they might well become leaders in a new wave of Doom Metal.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0974/6500/8471/files/Isole-The-Calm-Hunter-CD-127765-1-1668757897.jpg?v=1778164446
isole-dystopia-cd
Isole - Dystopia - CD

Fans of classic Doom Metal should beg, steal, or kill to get their hands on “Dystopia”. Even though “Silent Ruins” is over 50 minutes long, it is over before you know it. This is by no means a negative remark, but merely serves to underscore the quality of Isole’s songwriting. In fact, the music is highly enjoyable, heavy and intricate, and topped with a great production.

Although slow and mid-paced songs are most of what this album has to offer, Isole seems to be keeping a rather firm speed in moving through their songs. While none of the music is cheerful or mirthy, the atmosphere on “Silent Ruins” seems to be slightly more uplifting and positive than your regular doom metal band. Perhaps Isole sees the light at the end of the tunnel, rather than only the depressing journey through the tunnel itself. It is not all quite as sorrowful and dejected as you might expect. After lying on ice for many years that had only been predated by a time of not really getting started, they gave it another hit with a demo in 2005 and then finally this album in 2008. If you want to describe what this is all about, you actually need only one word, and that’s epic Bathory! Yes, it’s the albums “Hammerheart” and “Twilight of the Gods” which Ereb Altor have in their hearts and pay tribute to on this debut. And since no other band managed to substitute Bathory, it’s just right for Ereb Altor to do so. These guys created a blend of later Bathory and Candlemass, and the result is incredibly epic and majestic. As a result, interesting and deserving albums often get lost in the shuffle as reviewers reflect on those albums most “influential” upon later achievements.
Death metal pioneers Master are among those who have been shortchanged as a result of that phenomenon, and their 1990 masterpiece “On
the seventh Day, God Created... Master” remains a fascinating exploration both of the genre’s roots and of spaces it might have occupied had different paths been taken.
There are a couple of things that leap out immediately to even the casual listener. The first is the seeming primitivism of the music, with songs consisting of relatively brief, bludgeoning pieces driven by relentless rhythms, cyclic riffs and simple melodic hooks. The second is therealization that someone is playing some seriously insane, brilliantly constructed leads. in this case, that someone is paul Masvidal, farexceeding anything
he ever achieved with Cynic.
Beneath the surface simplicity, lies a creative spirit that at once recalls the primal birth of death metal (which Master was both present for and very much a driving force behind) and points the way to what the genre might have become. Very apparent are the genre’s hardcore roots, Master here eschewing the slayer-derived technical architecture that came to dominate most “modern” death metal in favor of structures that would not have been out of place on Discharge’s landmark “Hear Nothing see Nothing say Nothing” release (there are even a few appear-
ances of the infamous D-beat). Within the unrelenting storm of brutal repetition, the music’s core meaning is encoded, a sheer primal rage drip-ping from thunderous cycles of power chords and the open throated roar (again the hardcore influence) of vocalist and chief songwriter Paul speckman. To this, Master adds moments of ponderous reflection where songs collapse into a sort of high decibel dirge, an innate sense of
how to tease melody from the infernal depths of dissonance, and the aforementioned Masvidal solos (and it cannot be overemphasized just
how much these leads rip). Here we have Trouble returning with “Simple Mind Condition”, after a long hiatus (twelve years had passed since the release of “Plastic Green Head”), taking once more to the skies of metal. Some complaints and criticism followed upon its release which are not really fair. Although fat and doomy stomps as on “Psalm 9” and “The Skull” are not present in abundance, nor are the stoner metal speed assaults of the self-titled “Trouble”, but neither those have been present really since the self-titled came out. “Manic Frustration” was a killer album, no doubt, but different being focussed on hard rock and not the doom and stoner influences. “Plastic Green Head” remedied this problem, to impressive standards and resulted in another great Trouble album. This album features songs that are well-written and have a lot of sludgy stoner hooks, and are drenched in Eric Wagner’s (R.I.P.)
woe-is-me penmanship. The tempo is with wonderful penetrance almost continuously in the classic eighties turnip thrash beat, there is plenty of double bass, and Paule moos around wonderfully antisocially. A transitional phase between the band’s Death Metal roots and the hybrid of symphonic, gothic metal which they would carry forward for the rest of their career. This is an extremely dark album. The band retains their fascination with obscure occult magick and prophecies within the lyrics, and the music revolves around killer mid-paced Metal riffs drenched in the vocal libations of Christofer Johnsson.
The album starts off strongly with “The Wings of the Hydra”, and from there on the serpent has snaked about your spine. An addictive piece with an obvious Celtic Frost influence, chanting vocals, simple synth tones and arabesque guitar melodies which evoke the mythical age of the song’s namesake. The album’s ‘hit single’, “The Beauty in Black” is glorious and gothic, it uses a pair of operatic vocalists (male and female), a sort of predecessor to the revolving door of guest musicians the band would use on their later albums. Other excellent tracks include the charging “Riders of Theli”, the crushing doom of “Black” which would have fit almost perfectly on “Into the Pandemonium”. The rest of the album is equally dark and enchanting, with other standouts being the title track and “Evocation of Vovin”.
Synthesizers, flutes multiple vocalists, and the core of the band are all clear and precise throughout, yet it still carries a very raw and dark, ominous tone to it which trumps the later studio efforts. Let’s check out it. “Sirius B” is a lot longer than “Lemuria”, lasting for about 57 minutes, resulting in the longest songs included in both albums: seven of the eleven songs of this album are longer than 5 minutes, and the longest is over 7 minutes long. But, if you think that a very long song is boring, you’re wrong: all the songs are very interesting.

But, while “Lemuria” is aggressive, “Sirius B” is slower and involves the orchestra and the operatic chorus a lot more than its twin. This can only result in very beautiful songs, with very beautiful lyrics. I call this album “The Eastern Twin” because the lyrics of the songs talk about eastern mithology, journeys to that part of the world, and local legends from there. Each song is different from the others, of course, with the exception of two songs that can be treated as one: “Kali Yuga”. This situation is also found in “Lemuria” with the song “Three Ships of Berik”. For example: “The Blood of Kingu” is a very aggressive song with very long lyrics, and “Sirius B” is a very slow, dark song with only two words as lyrics; “Call of Dagon” is a very simple song with an ethereal atmosphere, and “Voyage of Gurdgieff (The Fourth Way)” is a very complex song with a difficult rhythm; “The Wondrous World of Punt” is a slow, symphonic and very beautiful song, and “Son of The Sun” and “The Khlysti Evangelist” are fast and aggressive songs.

Tracklist:

1.
