Mari Boine - Goaskinviellja (Eagle Brother) - CD DIGIPAK

Mari Boine’s 1993 masterpiece ‘Goaskinviellja (Eagle Brother)’ returns in a newly remastered edition with bonus track on By Norse, set for release on December 5th. Recorded at the legendary Rainbow Studio, the album blends joik, jazz, and world music textures into a timeless soundscape. This reissue includes a previously unreleased version of ‘Roahkkadit rohtte luodi mána´z?an – Child, Listen Child,’ discovered in the archives of the National Library of Norway – a heartfelt tribute to heritage and future generations.
Originally released on Boine’s own label Lean, Eagle Brother marked a new chapter in her journey from ‘Gula Gula’ (1989) toward a subtler, more meditative expression of Sámi identity. Recorded with Jan Erik Kongshaug at Oslo’s legendary Rainbow Studio, the album fuses traditional joik with jazz bass, African and Latin percussion, and atmospheric soundscapes.

For this 2025 reissue, the album has been meticulously remastered from the original tapes by Robin Schmidt (24-96 Mastering) and expanded with the previously unreleased version of ‘Child, Listen Child.’ Produced and mixed by Tellef Kvifte, the track extends the spirit of Eagle Brother, offering a message of pride, resilience, and wisdom to the next generation of Sámi youth.

Eagle Brother stands at the crossroads of Boine’s early raw activism and her later spiritual lyricism. Where Gula Gula called for awakening, Eagle Brother seeks inner balance – “a long-spun and suggestive story,” as Swedish critics wrote. Its soundscape seamlessly weaves Sámi joik, modal jazz, African rhythms, and ambient textures into a world of its own. Three decades later, the rediscovered Child, Listen Child feels prophetic: a call to preserve language, rhythm, and cultural pride for the future.
