The magic of their partnership can be summed up in simple words: \"These are the encounters you pray for,\" says Colin. \"As soon as you meet someone like that, you know you have to create something together.\" And so they did: together, they released their debut album, Sober Maal, which translates to \"sober meal.\" Recorded by Tim de Gieter, the title expresses the simplest form of sustenance, formalizing gratitude. The album was written and recorded in a short span of time (less than a week) at the 18th-century Doopsgezinde Kerk (Middelburg, Netherlands), thanks to the Le Guess Who? festival. Melancholy permeates the wooded sound of the first single, \"Grafschrift.\" The music is characterized by light and shadow, with sensitive and minimal forms. At the heart of their project are the voices, resonating under the church's vaulted ceiling and its natural reverb, creating a delicate blend of purely acoustic sources (banjo, hurdy-gurdy, piano, organ, with the latter two played by Pim van de Werken). It’s a different universe: the result is clearly far removed from the oppressive masses of Amenra. The voices of Colin and Tonnie intertwine with the choir and a selection of instruments, including the banjo, piano, hurdy-gurdy, and the powerful central organ. The album cover features a poignant image from history: Flemish refugees during World War I sleeping in the church. Sober Maal is conceived as an ode to the lost and a \"ritual celebrating humanity and community.\" It is where ego merges into the conviviality of creating and listening to music, giving voice to what connects us as individuals. This desire for connection, carried by music, reveals a spirituality without preaching, rooted in the wonders of the world and the bond with our environment and loved ones.
