klaus-schulze-in-blue-cd
Klaus Schulze - In Blue - CD

1995 marked the end of Klaus Schulze's MIDI era. The German composer had already begun to distance himself from it with "Das Wagner Desaster," but it is clearly "In Blue" that signifies the definitive shift away from a technology often viewed with skepticism. Instead, Schulze returns to the Berlin School style, delivering music that is more ethereal, ambient, and contemplative. The release of this album was met with enthusiasm from many fans, some even placing it alongside the revered classics "Timewind," "Moondawn," "Mirage," and "X."

"In Blue" is an album that fully immerses the listener. The three tracks span 78, 44, and 34 minutes, respectively. This is hardly surprising coming from Schulze. Notably, while the 2005 reissue includes an enticing third CD, the tracks are divided into sub-parts, which detracts from the experience. The first CD is entirely dedicated to "Into the Blue." Despite its lengthy duration of over an hour and a quarter, it quickly makes an impression. From the very first moments, it’s clear that the return to the soaring sounds of the 70s begins immediately. The technology of 1995 enhances the music, providing a fresh dimension. This 'update' of Schulze's sound does not replace the music of the 70s but pays homage to it. Some remnants from the 1991-1994 period, like the synthetic guitar, still linger but blend seamlessly into the overall composition. The alternation between ambient and rhythmic passages adds an extra layer of variety without feeling excessive.

However, the highlight of "In Blue" lies on the second CD. Just by glancing at the tracklist, the title "Return to the Tempel" stands out. Here, Schulze invites Manuel Göttsching, with whom he co-founded ASH RA TEMPEL. Although the two musicians have maintained contact over the years, it has been since 1981 that Göttsching played with Schulze (on "Tonwelle"). It’s important to note that while Göttsching and Schulze return to the Tempel, the former plays over the latter's music. The piece itself is sublime; it’s evident that this is primarily Klaus Schulze's work, yet Göttsching's guitar chords enhance the experience without overshadowing it. His solo at the 28-minute mark is particularly noteworthy, with the mix giving the guitar an almost dreamlike quality.

Following this magnificent return is "Serenade in Blue." This track aligns with "Into the Blue" but is calmer and more cohesive. The sounds of harp and flute are more prominent, creating an even more contemplative atmosphere. It’s quite successful; "Serenade in Blue" is perfect for meticulous work or deep reflection. However, listening to the music purely for enjoyment may prove more challenging.

"In Blue" is rightly regarded as a significant album in Klaus Schulze's discography. The fusion of the Berlin School with more contemporary electronic sounds, along with a return to a less convoluted style, has paid off. Nevertheless, this success does not prevent Schulze from evolving further, as he begins to explore techno influences. It’s bound to be an exciting journey.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0974/6500/8471/files/Klaus-Schulze-In-Blue-CD-177203-1-1773821923_b74ff992-b28a-40f0-9485-8b29a9ed4b39.jpg?v=1778325091
