I broke all my own rules on this record, pieties I had about low fi recording, certain types of processes. Given a real budget and access to a nice studio, I went direct and straight towards a very big dream, a very big vision I had in my mind. The album began when I became obsessed with rhythm; specifically with straight rhythm, with how heavy it can feel, how emotional robotic dance rhythms can be, with how straight time opens up these new time fields, within which a millisecond can feel so elastic, so charged. I found a rhythm section that could play perfectly in time with intense emotion; and paired them with a percussionist who never played the same thing twice, jazz musicians I admired, and myself on piano, an instrument I barely knew how to play. I wanted to make this heavy, hard, clear, undulating bedrock on which I could lay my songs and my voice; both of which felt on this record so acutely vulnerable I could only imagine surrounding them with a dance beat. The
rhythm made me feel so secure in the music I felt like I could be softer than before, go towards expressing some kind of transcendent sadness, which comes from love, of course, from ultimate softness, from love that cannot be separated from anger, which feels like the only thing you can feel when the world is half underwater and half burning and no-one in power has any desire to do anything reasonable about it, when we are hard at work building a world for ourselves in which we cannot actually live.
