Dom Sensitive is the exciting new moniker being embraced by prolific Yartapuulti/Port Adelaide based underground musician Dom Trimboli (Wireheads/Dom & The Wizards/Critical Energy). A lively and methodical evolution from an artist with an impressive back-catalogue of recorded material. Utterly captivating, hyper stylised and at times compellingly bizarre, Dom Sensitive carefully created his debut album Leather Trim one song at a time with old friend and collaborator Tom Spall (The High Beamers/Body Horror) at Milestone Studios on Peramangk Country in the Adelaide Hills. The pair would routinely enter the studio after dark and reappear again for breakfast with a newly completed track; repeating this process until they had more or less filled a 12-inch LP to the brim. Inspired in equal measures by patchwork hip-hop production, autobiographical fiction and heart-on-ya-sleeve psychedelia, this is a record of spectacularly fierce creativity and adventure. Laden with streams of sentimental sentences, loopy mechanical junk-yard rhythms, wacky samples, wayward pianos, abundant studio trickery and oceans of tape echo; it’s an extravagant and highly spirited journey from start to finish. Dom’s celebrated knack for writing surreal, evocative and clever lyrics is on relentless display across the entire album and it features some of his most enthralling narratives to date. The core themes are carefully disguised with ambiguous metaphors and perfectly implemented (albeit seemingly exaggerated) details which give the listener a sense they’re wandering through the set of an epic novel. At times the words are delivered with the flow of the rapper Dom has always hinted at becoming, allowing for a cascade of concepts and syllables to fly from his tongue at a remarkably swift pace. There are also sincere and candid moments scattered throughout, which find him occasionally attempting to croon in his own modest nonchalance. Guest performances from fellow South Australian independent music scene alumni Georgia Oatley, Vic Conrad, Liam Kenny, Ricky Albeck and Brad Cameron combine with Tom Spall’s innovative instrumentation and production to add further depth and flavour to the deluxe sound palette. Leather Trim finds its way into the world via digital and vinyl release on Dinosaur City Records. It’s the fascinating, bold and whimsically idiosyncratic album that 2024 desperately wants and needs. Something to dance to and inspire your own creative endeavours. A fresh new approach from an experienced campaigner who appears to be on a constant quest for artistic liberty.
