Friska Viljor - Don't Save The Last Dance - LP

  • Description

Even though the Stockholm indie-pop duo is famous for their live shows that lead to true eruptions of happy hormones, it was always clear at second glance: The sugar-sweet, sometimes childishly naive melodies always had a double bottom. The lyrics were often about insecurities, fears or broken hearts. The culmination of this combination was on the 2019 album "Broken", on which singer Joakim Sveningsson chronologically traced the separation from his life partner and created probably the darkest album in the band's history. The following tour became a lived catharsis and it often happened that the singer was overcome by his emotions and burst into tears. The audience was in no way inferior and howled directly with him. Nevertheless, the band and the audience always found their way out of the deep hole and the concerts ended in a frenzy of euphoria. On their eighth album "Don't Save The Last Dance", out May 13th, the Swedes show their best side again. Not quite as gloomy as on "Broken", yet another aspect creeps into all the melancholy and self-doubt: The view of the numerous dystopian scenarios that the world has on offer today. While the 2015 album "Remember Our Name" first featured the perspective of being a parent and the worries that go along with it, today the question of what world awaits the growing generation is increasingly raised. The epic six-and-a-half-minute song "Inbreeds" serves as the album's centerpiece. The basic framework and lyrics were written by Daniel Johansson several years ago. But looking around at the current world, "Inbreeds" seems as if it was written for this very time. Johansson says, "It is a song about the progressive polarization that can be seen in our society. The lyrics were written back in 2015 and to realize that seven years later they are more relevant than ever is indescribably depressing. However, we don't give up hope that change is coming." "Inbreeds" also offers another novelty when the band sings in their native language for the first time. This gives the song an extra dimension and creates a great goosebump moment. The single "My Own Satan", which was already released last summer and opens the album, deals with the struggle with inner demons and the fact that one often acts against one's better knowledge and always manages to justify one's own shortcomings to oneself, With the single "All These Fears" the album offers a song that should immediately find its way into the ever-growing list of band classics. Here you will find all the elements of songwriting that have always made the band what it is: one of the most likeable, openhearted and unaffected bands that the Scandinavian indie-cosmos has to offer.
