  • Description

Having emerged from the post-new wave scene in Britain and existed as a bridge between the styles of post-punk and progressive rock, Marillion would become the most commercially successful neo-prog band of the 1980s.

Marillion's recorded studio output since 1982 is composed of twenty albums and generally regarded in two distinct eras, delineated by the departure of original lead singer Fish in late 1988 and the subsequent arrival of replacement Steve Hogarth in early 1989. The band achieved eight top ten UK albums between 1983 and 1994, including a number one album in 1985 with Misplaced Childhood, and during the period the band were fronted by Fish they had eleven top 40 hits on the UK Singles Chart.

They are best known for the 1985 singles "Kayleigh" and "Lavender", which reached numbers two and five respectively, with "Kayleigh" also entering the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States.

This new triple CD set focuses on the era during which Fish fronted the band, and features a selection of previously unreleased live broadcast and demo recordings from the years 1979 to 1988.

DISC ONE includes a selection of demos and rehearsals going right back to ’79 when the band was still named Silmarillion. When Fish joined the group in 1981, the name was shortened. This set of recordings include the very first rehearsal with Fish on-board, alongside recordings made at The Enid’s studio in 1979 and 1980.
DISC TWO features Marillion’s performance at Reading Festival in August 1983, a show recorded for live transmission and broadcast simultaneously. Still promoting their debut album, Script For A Jester’s Tear at the time, Marillion played a dynamic 75-minute set that warm afternoon, some 40 years ago now.
DISC THREE concludes this majestic collection with Marillion’s show in Berlin, on 18th June 1988, just about a month before Fish left the band in July. Featuring a rather strange cover version of Chubby Checker’s “Let’s Twist Again” as the show’s penultimate track, it would appear the band were in high spirits despite being close to breaking up just a few weeks hence.
