The group was founded by Rüdiger Hennecke and Carsten Otterbach under the name of Cadaverous Smell. With the arrival of guitarist Harry Busse the group changed its name to Minas Morgul and only with the arrival of singer/bassist Marc Grewe did the group take the name of "Morgoth". After the release of two demos, the band began a German tour in support of Pestilence, Autopsy, Demolition Hammer and Obituary. In February 1991 the group's first full-length "Cursed" was released. A support tour to Kreator, Biohazard, Immolation and Massacre followed. After a stop, the group returned in 1993 with "Odium" (Century Media Records). In 1996 the third album "Feel Sorry for the Fanatic" was released, which marks a change of sound, now more based on industrial/alternative metal. The group then broke up in 1998. In 2010 they reformed by announcing a tour to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of "Cursed". At the end of 2020 the group announces the definitive split.
