Phil Rudd releases his first solo album after all those years spent with the most popular hard rock band. This endeavor undoubtedly showcases his artistic sincerity, as the AC/DC drummer has no need for money. Moreover, the content bears no resemblance to the Australian group, although it falls within a straightforward hard rock 'n' roll style without frills. The overall sound sometimes feels "amateur," adding a refreshing touch of authenticity in an era where everything is often overproduced.
"Head Job" was partly recorded in his personal studio in Tauranga, New Zealand, not far from his restaurant, "Phil's Place." He collaborated with two local musicians, Allan Badger and Geoffrey Martin, who handled the bass, guitar, and vocal parts. The drumming hits with a satisfying punch on tracks like "Lonely Child," "The Other Side," and "40 Days." Their contribution is noteworthy, with the guitars sounding excellent—no hint of modernity, just direct and to the point. The vocals are, of course, rough and raw, perfectly suited for this gritty rock sound.
Listeners may draw comparisons to MOTÖRHEAD (though less heavy), THE ANGELS, PETE WAY's solo work, NAZARETH (especially on the cacophonous "Bad Move"), KEITH RICHARDS (on the delightfully rustic "Crazy"), or even, surprisingly, PETER GABRIEL on the more accessible "No Right." The eleven tracks on "Head Job" hold up well, with no ballads or weak compositions to be found. While nothing groundbreaking, it's simply good, unpretentious rock 'n' roll, making Phil Rudd's "Head Job" a pleasant surprise and a refreshing breath of fresh air. A must-have for all fans of solid, raw rock without artifice!
