Immediately following the release of "Where I Come From", his debut album, the German weekly DER SPIEGEL certified: "Great start from a super-talent." NEUE MUSIK ZEITUNG chose the album as "Debut of the Month", and the renowned Münchner Konzertgesellschaft association awarded him its Jazz Incentive Prize.
At his numerous live appearances, for instance at the Rheingau Musik Festival, the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival (SHMF), or at "in" jazz clubs in Germany (as well as at international venues such as ronnie scott's in London), he was rewarded with rapturous enthusiasm. Highly acclaimed concerts like the one with the Concertgebouw Orchestra ensured that his reputation as an exceptional talent continued to grow in the world of classical music, too. Sandro Roy is regarded as what may be Germany's most promising musician in the borderland between jazz and classical.
Just the way it happens at his live concerts, on "Discovery" the highly versatile Sandro Roy flourishes a bouquet of musical surprises. Martin Taylor, a world-renowned British guitarist who was once in Stephane Grappelli's band, encounters the violinist on "True" in a ballad full of poetry. On the title track "Discovery" by Sandro Roy, jazz pianist Jerome Landsberger joins him to let the piece sparkle in decidedly modern-jazz tradition.
Another artist who has also appeared on SKIP with albums of his own, David Gazarov lets the Django Reinhardt piece "Place De Broukere" evolve while tickling the ivories much like Thelonious Monk. Highlights emerge from get-togethers with the legendary Bireli Lagrene on guitar, whether on the Hoagy Carmichael ballad "The Nearness of You", the Stevie Wonder hit "You Are the Sunshine of My Life", or "Dinelo". On the latter, Sandro Roy and his Unity Band present the Di Piazza classic sensitively, yet always with an eye to the modern together with Bireli Lagrene.
And of course Jerome Weiss, Sandro's companion for years on piano, can't be missing here. On the John Williams composition "Sabrina" he reveals what might be the best access to Sandro Roy from the classical side.
In a nutshell, the scope of wide-ranging constellations currently being offered by Sandro Roy is illustrated here. Sandro Roy will continue to broaden his audience playing as duo, trio, quartet, with orchestras, and as soloist. The excitement is growing to see which ensembles he has in store for his listeners.
