Sentenced was a Finnish melodic death/gothic metal band formed in 1989 in the town of Muhos and broke up in 2005; started in 1988 as Deformity and changed their name to Sentenced in 1989, after a few line-up changes.
Their first two albums, "Shadows of the Past" and "North from Here", were in typical European death metal style. "Amok", released in 2005, has slowed down, acquiring a more melodic structure.
The next two "Down" and "Frozen" turned into a more heavy metal attitude with significant melodic features. "Crimson" (2000), "The Cold White Light" (2002) and their ultimate release, "The Funeral Album" (2005), are mixed of gothic and melodic death metal, with a very intense mood.
Sentenced have been awarded Platinum in the band's native Finland for their posthumous live DVD Buried Alive. The trophy was handed out to the band's former members at the Century Media 20th anniversary party at the Tavastia club in 2008.
