The Finest Performance From The Who’s Tommy Tour.
Capturing the third night of a weeklong engagement by The Who performing much of their rock opera Tommy - plus a few bonus numbers - at the Fillmore East in New York on October 22nd 1969, this radio broadcast remains among the finest quality recordings available from the band’s 69/70 Tommy Tour.
The Who had been touring in the UK since 5th July ’69, before, briefly, heading to the American east coast for two shows on 12th and 17th of the month – the latter of these being their famous appearance at the Woodstock Festival. But the Who flew straight back to Britain after Woodstock to resume the UK leg of the tour. They came back to the USA on 10th October, took in two Canadian shows on 14th and 15th, played a few more gigs on the East Coast, then, on 21st of the month, began their 6-night, Fillmore residency. Supported by the Bay Area collective AUM opening, followed by fellow Brits King Crimson, the shows were all received with enthusiasm and positivity.
Their 22nd October show however was the only one of these concerts recorded for live radio transmission, also synched across the US, and is thus the premier recording from this series of concerts.
