The latest release from Drift Into Black, When Ashes Remain,represents the band's most ambitious and diverse work to date. Conceptually, the album picks up after 2021's "Patterns Of Light" - a harrowing tale of a deaf/ mute girl who witnesses her mother's murder at the hands of her step-father and her journey towards retribution.
Her spirit now visits and watches over, a young boy who suffers with his own abuse and finds solace and comfort in her protective embrace. The character is brought to life by the inimitable force of NYC artist, ALYXX, who has lent her vocal talents to the past three albums and brings a cinematic and theatrical quality to the storytelling that is immersive and soul crushing. Other guest musicians include additional vocals by William Smith (Reeking Aura, Buckshot Facelift) and additional guitars by Semir Özerkan (Nevermore, Oceans of Slumber, Necrofier). The album artwork and inlay designs were created by the legendary Travis Smith (Opeth, Katatonia, etc, etc) Musically, the album balances dirge-like doom passages with melodic and atmospheric interludes, highlighting the band's ability to shift between brutality and melancholy.
