They've rubbed shoulders with Beyoncé, collaborated with Orelsan, and been invited by Karl Lagerfeld to sing at a Chanel show: the Ibeyi sisters are releasing their new music video and single, “ASET.” Something to tide us over until the release of *Offering*, an album due out September 18th.
Since “River,” Ibeyi's first hit in 2014, the sisters' career has taken off. Their second album, *Ash*, was nominated for the IMPALA European Album of the Year award in 2017. Between an appearance in Beyoncé's “All Night” video, an invitation from Karl Lagerfeld to sing in Cuba at a Chanel show, performances at Coachella, and a collaboration with Orelsan on “Note pour trop tard,” Ibeyi is carving out a place for itself in the music industry. The unclassifiable duo is back with “ASET,” a track that blends soul, contemporary R&B, Afro-Cuban rhythms, jazz, and many other musical influences.
“ASET” is a modern lament where the melody intensifies with each passing second, oscillating between sensuality, urgency, and spirituality. IBeyi invokes Isis, also known as Aset. A symbol of sacred knowledge, the Egyptian goddess represents resurrection and absolute love. In mythology, Aset steals the knowledge of the gods to resurrect and make Osiris, her lover, a god. But in a more modern interpretation, the song sings of Aset's voice. After years of devotion, a melodious cry resounds, a blend of pain and power: "Without my light, you're nobody, without my love, who loves you?" What love has she received in return?
And while this track delves into intimate reflections, their new album, Offering, is equally so. Co-produced by Michael Brun, Khalil Cherradi, Pablo Pablo, Jason Pounds, and Jack Peñate, the Ibeyi sisters immerse themselves in their own story for a deeply personal project. Introspective, the album Offering explores the courage to confront oneself, to embrace our emotions unfiltered.
