Jupiter Cyclops - One Eye Opens - LP

Phoenix, Arizona heavy metal band Jupiter Cyclops returns with “One Eye Opens”, the follow-up to its 2024 debut album, “Age of the UFOnaut”. The new record develops the group’s established combination of classic hard rock, traditional heavy metal and NWOBHM while introducing additional elements of proto-thrash, slower melodic songwriting and more atmospheric arrangements.

Jupiter Cyclops was formed in Phoenix in 2019 by vocalist Aaron Peltz after his move from Southern California. Initially conceived as a two-piece doom project, the band began with a particularly heavy and sludgy approach. Its musical direction changed after guitarist Dustin Lyon joined the line-up, shifting the material towards a faster combination of classic metal and hard rock. Bassist Jake Melius and drummer Sam Callender later completed the current four-piece formation.
The band describes its sound as energetic, melodic, ripping, epic and diverse. On “One Eye Opens”, these characteristics are expressed through guitar-led arrangements, prominent bass lines, a direct rhythm section and melodic lead vocals. The album retains the seventies-rooted approach heard on the previous release but brings a stronger range of eighties influences into the songwriting. According to the band, the record is heavier than “Age of the UFOnaut” while also being more cohesive and varied.

The material was largely developed during the promotional cycle for “Age of the UFOnaut” and several of the songs were already being performed live while the band was supporting the previous album. Some compositions also originated from earlier periods in the group’s history. “Who Are They Foolin’” was originally written by Jake Melius when he was sixteen while “The Initiates” had been intended for an earlier version of the band’s first album before being reworked for this release.
Rather than assembling a collection centred only on individual singles, Jupiter Cyclops designed “One Eye Opens” as a complete start-to-finish listening experience. The band selected a concise sequence of eight songs following the traditional structure of four tracks per side associated with classic heavy metal and hard rock albums. This approach keeps the running time focused while allowing each composition to contribute a distinct mood to the overall record.

The lyrical themes move between social observation and personal experience. The album was written against a background of concerns about manipulation, control, fear and the perceived loss of humanity in modern society. These ideas are balanced by songs dealing with internal conflict, grief, self-determination, personal growth and spiritual awareness. All lyrics were written by Aaron Peltz.
Opening track “Who Are They Foolin’” draws on early thrash metal alongside influences from Iron Maiden and Deep Purple, the song addresses the power exercised by a small group of people over wider society. “Snakes” carries a darker eighties character and examines the continuing internal struggle with personal demons.

“Roll On Slow” is built around guitar hooks and a theme of moving out of darkness changing one’s attitude and confronting the forces that prevent personal progress. “The Way It Was” introduces another side of Jupiter Cyclops’ writing: it is the band’s first power ballad and its first slower, more emotional composition with expanded orchestration. The lyrics reflect Aaron Peltz’s experience of coming to terms with his mother’s death and learning to reconnect with positive memories rather than remembering only the period of illness. “High Level Devil” is rooted in classic metal and the Michael Schenker era of UFO. Its lyrics present the conflict between good and evil as an internal struggle emphasizing the individual’s ability to regain control over self-created darkness. “Heavy Phase” takes inspiration from Thin Lizzy and features prominent bass work from Jake Melius. The song recalls Peltz’s discovery of heavy metal at the age of thirteen and the lasting change it brought to his musical identity. At more than seven minutes, “The Initiates” is the longest composition on the album and one of its principal stylistic departures. The track combines an epic structure with keyboards and atmospheric textures accompanying lyrics about modern-day wizards. The title track closes the record with a more direct heavy metal approach, its central image uses the Cyclops as an allegory for the opening of the third eye: once awareness has been reached, the previous way of viewing the world cannot be restored.
“One Eye Opens” was recorded at The Ripper’s House, produced by Jupiter Cyclops and mixed by guitarist Dustin Lyon. The cover artwork was created by Mashai Fattahi. By handling production internally, the band maintained a consistent relationship between the performances, arrangements and overall musical direction.
