With his fifth SOLO album "Perception Of Time", the Swedish pianist continues his very personal musical journey – and moves even more into the direction of a contemporary neoclassical expression. His unmistakable, Nordic-influenced sound between neo-classical and jazz – creates a sound that puts him in line with Nils Frahm, Max Richter and Ólafur Arnalds.
He consistently continues on the path to reduction and musical clarity – simple, winning melodies that shine in their expressiveness precisely because of their concentration on the essentials. Motifs and sound spaces from which a special magic emerges with minimal means, whereby the engaging harmonies, calm movements and subtle emotional shifts never seem simple. At the same time, his new album carries fine echoes of the great European piano tradition and touches contrapuntal and fugue-like forms in places, but always remains unmistakably Tingvall – in sound and sensitivity. He creates a musical space for reflection in his playing – a calm but emotionally powerful listening experience that seeks depth, closeness and resonance in troubled times.
In a world that is developing ever faster, louder and more complex, "Perception Of Time" sees itself as a conscious counter-movement. The clear and at the same time touching piano motifs form a haven of peace, a tonal alternative to the outside world.
The album captures those rare moments of silence that can occur at certain times of the day – such as in the atmosphere of "Very Early" or "Very Late", but is also shaped by our present, for example in pieces like "Orphans", which is dedicated to children who have lost their families to wars worldwide. Here the pianist reflects on the fragility and uncertainty of our political time. A poetic sound journey between darkness and departure, hope and silence.
In a special edition of the album limited to 500 copies, Martin Tingvall plays some pieces in Wurlitzer versions on a second 10 inch LP. For the new album there will be a tour of more than 25 concerts through Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands and Sweden, which will be extended by further dates.
