Pyroclast - Fractured State - CD

Glasgow heavy metal band PYROCLAST open a new chapter with "Fractured State", an eight-track album that establishes the band's identity under its new name. Rooted in traditional heavy metal while drawing naturally from progressive, power and thrash influences, the record is built around twin guitars, prominent bass, acoustic drums and the clean, wide-ranging vocals of Mark Reid. Rather than working within a fixed formula, PYROCLAST allow each song to develop according to its own character. This gives "Fractured State" a natural sense of movement, from the direct, riff-driven attack of "Slaughterhouse" to the broader scope of "Erebus and Terror", the 9:36 closing track. Changes in pace, length and structure serve the individual songs, allowing the band to explore different sides of its sound while retaining a clear musical identity. The album's lyrical scope is equally broad, exploring human behaviour, psychology, history, mythology, power, mortality and the consequences of ambition through distinct stories and perspectives. "Prisoner Game" draws inspiration from the Stanford Prison Experiment and questions of authority and assigned roles; "Break the Tide" addresses psychological oppression; "Ozymandias" turns to the transience of power; and "Erebus and Terror" takes its subject from the doomed Franklin expedition. Although "Fractured State" is not a concept album, a common thread connects these subjects: individuals, beliefs, societies and certainties being tested or pushed towards breaking point. This gives the album thematic cohesion while allowing each song to retain its own narrative and identity. The album was produced and recorded by PYROCLAST, mixed by guitarist Chris Horne and mastered by vocalist Mark Reid. Reid also created the cover artwork and booklet layout, with photography by Liam "Lockie" Lockhart, extending the band's direct involvement from the music to the visual presentation of the release.
