The ultra-prolific Jason Köhnen (BONG-RA, THE KILIMANJARO DARKJAZZ ENSEMBLE, THE ANSWER LIES IN THE BLACK VOID, CELESTIAL SEASON) continues a rich seam of form with the 5th full-length emission from THE LOVECRAFT SEXTET, in which the feral obscurity of avant-primitivist-Black Metal is injected into his patented cinematic Darkjazz.

New album "Penance (De lijken van de Gebroeders De Witt)" is inspired by the 1675 Jan Baen painting of the same name that currently hangs in the Amsterdam Rijksmuseum. In 1672, the De Witt brothers were beaten, mutilated and hanged before a crowd for alleged treason. It is said that the observers themselves committed acts of cannibalism with the brothers’ severed body parts. The event and subsequent painting a reflection of incredible human barbarism that has always profoundly affected Köhnen.

Expressing the emotions conjured by Baen’s work, the reverberant music renders nocturnal Chamber Opera and the deathly pallor of subterranean lo-fi Black Metal with Jazz – both smoky late-night evocations and writhing free fire - and sets swirling Noise amidst the ghosts of Trip hop and plunderphonic Electronica. The transfixing vocal contributions split between beauteous, heaven-sent soprano arias and shadow-dwelling rasping evil.

Funereal, disturbed, awe-inspiring and contemplative. Red in tooth and claw.
