Los Angeles-based psychedelic garage-rock trio The Spyrals return to Fuzz Club with 'Heavy Smoke', their first album for the label since 2020's 'Same Old Line'. Led by guitarist/vocalist Jeff Lewis alongside Georgia Feroce (keys/vocals) and Dash Borinstein (drums), the band strips their fuzzed-out rock’n’roll back to its most instinctive form: live, loose and locked into the groove. Where earlier records have moved between cavernous garage jangle, bluesy fuzz, psych repetition and sun-baked country, 'Heavy Smoke' throws those strands into what Lewis calls “a blender of all those styles” – and then hits record before the moment can disappear.
Having just wrapped up a West Coast tour with the itch to record, 'Heavy Smoke' was captured in Summer 2025 at drummer Dash’s poolside studio in the San Fernando Valley. Cutting it all on an 8-track reel-to-reel, the band met once a week for just over a month, each song beginning with a Lewis riff and an improvised jam. Many arrangements took shape almost immediately; first or second takes became the finished performances, with no instrumental overdubs.
“As close to live as we could get,” Lewis says: “It’s really the band as we sound all together in a room. This felt like the most free form record we have made. It’s a very raw sound. Minimal effects. Just find a groove and work it." That immediacy gives 'Heavy Smoke' a raw, physical charge, all pushed by the easy chemistry of a band trusting instinct over polish.
On the lyrical themes that run through 'Heavy Smoke', Lewis says: “There seems to be a theme of impending doom mixed with hope that life will get better that permeates this record. That might be true of every Spyrals record but this one is a product of the time that we are in. There’s a theme lyrically that we can never reach the life that we crave. We have to trade our time for money, but never have enough of both. Musically there is aggression and desire and bliss. Accepting that life is ups and downs is important. We can’t have everything we want all at once or at the same time. Accepting reality and going beyond it into your own world.”
Sweaty, unvarnished and alive, 'Heavy Smoke' captures The Spyrals at their most free-form and immediate. It's due for release November 20th 2026 on Fuzz Club.
