A classic showbiz story of rags to riches finds a young Vito (thankfully not Corleone!) Rocco Farinola, aka Vic Damone working as an usher and driving the elevator at the Paramount Theatre, Manhattan, when who should step into the elevator but Perry Como! Stopping the elevator midway, Vic began to sing for the great crooner.
Sufficiently impressed Mr. Como recommended Vic have an audition with a friend of his and at 17 years of age Vic began his singing career on radio WHN. You couldn’t make up a story like that! Or could you, we will probably never know for sure, but it’s a great story and the newly re-named Vic Damone went on to have a fabulous lifetime singing career. And here’s another story, he won the prize on the famed Arthur Godfrey Talent Scouts show in 1947 and then met Milton Berle backstage who secured him a night club spot which led to Vic signing a contract with Mercury Records from 1947 -1956 when he left to join Columbia. Classic showbiz stories! Here we feature three of those early Columbia albums on our four albums classic set.
