Northern Ireland's Waylander return with "Mac Tíre / Son of the Land", their sixth full-length studio album and the latest chapter in a career spanning more than three decades. Since forming in 1993, the band has become one of the defining names of Pagan and Celtic Metal, blending extreme metal with traditional Irish folk influences long before the genre achieved international recognition.

Following the influential debut "Reawakening Pride Once Lost" (Century Media, 1998), Waylander continued to refine their distinctive sound through "The Light, the Dark and the Endless Knot", "Honour Amongst Chaos", "Kindred Spirits" and the acclaimed concept album "Ériú's Wheel". Throughout their career, they have remained committed to combining heavy music with Ireland's rich musical heritage and ancient traditions.

Unlike its predecessor, “Mac Tíre / Son of the Land” is not structured as a continuous concept album. Instead, each composition explores a different aspect of Ireland's mythology, history, spirituality and landscape while remaining connected by a shared celebration of the country's ancestral identity. The album title derives from the Irish term "Mac Tíre ("Son of the Land")", the traditional name for the wolf, symbolising Ireland's ancient wilderness and the enduring relationship between its people and the natural world.

Musically, the album embraces a wide spectrum of influences, incorporating elements of traditional heavy metal, black metal, death metal, doom and thrash alongside Irish folk melodies. Whistles, Irish bouzouki, bodhrán, Uilleann pipes, fiddle and cello enrich the arrangements without overshadowing the band's powerful guitar-driven foundation, resulting in a sound that remains unmistakably Waylander.

The lyrics draw inspiration from Ireland's mythology, legendary figures and natural landmarks. Songs such as "Macha" pay tribute to one of the country's most significant Celtic goddesses, while "Hy Brasil (Isle of Mists)" revisits the enduring legend of the phantom island said to lie beyond Ireland's western shores. "Sliabh Gullion" celebrates one of the island's most mythologically important mountains, "Our Once Wooded Isle" reflects on Ireland's environmental past, and "Mallachtaí" explores the influence once attributed to satire and curses within early Irish bardic tradition. The album concludes with "She of the Sorrows", an epic interpretation of the tragic legend of Deirdre from the Ulster Cycle.

The album was recorded, produced, mixed and mastered by Dave Briggs at Stonecircle Studios, ensuring a cohesive production that balances the clarity of the traditional instruments with the intensity of the heavier arrangements. Additional recording was provided by Ashley Cleland.

Waylander have built a solid international reputation through festival appearances and live performances across Europe, earning the respect of audiences within the Pagan, Folk and Extreme Metal communities.

For distributors and retailers, “Mac Tíre / Son of the Land” represents a valuable addition to the Pagan, Folk and Extreme Metal catalogue. Waylander's established reputation, distinctive musical identity and loyal international audience offer strong appeal for specialist record stores, collectors and fans seeking authentic Celtic-inspired metal.
